Rowan
Knitting and Crochet Magazine No. 42 (ZM42) features
handknitting and crochet designs from Marie Wallin, Kaffe Fassett,
Sarah Hatton, Sarah Dallas, Erika Knight, Stephanie White, Nina
Chakkour, Cathy Carron, Anna Tillman, Sharon Miller, Jennie
Atkinson, Lisa Richardson, Antoni & Alison, WeardOwney,
Carol Meldrum, Leah Sutton, and Brandon Mably.
The new Autumn Winter season heralds a focus on the aesthetics
of yarns - their texture, beauty and colour. Mohair is the important
fibre of the season, as well as loose hand spun type roving
yarns which add a home made feel. Inspiration for garment design
comes from the return to everything natural with emphasis on
the homely, cosy and hand made looks. Rowan is promoting three
stories for Autumn/Winter 2007: Tundra, Highlander and Reflection.
Each of the stories is delightfully styled to inspire the knitter
and introduces garments which are both beautiful and very wearable.

Story
1 - Tundra is inspired is by the icy wildernesses
of the Arctic regions. The colour direction comes from the shades
found in such austere and dramatic landscapes. These combine
together to produce a palette of natural tones ranging from
stone through to darker browns, and ice grey through to anthracite.
Fashion direction is inspired by the need to wrap up and protect
ones self from the elements. The Tundra collection includes
chunky wraps and shrugs, warm cardigans and traditionally inspired
sweaters. Dramatically photographed in the wild landscapes of
Scotland by Chris Bracewell and beautifully styled by Louise
Sykes.

Story
2 - Highlander is inspired by the soft mid tone colours
found in the Scottish Highlands in the autumn. A natural colour
range from the earthy mixtures of lichen, leaves and berries,
combine to create a story which is traditionally inspired with
a slight eccentric twist. The Highlander collection has a natural
home made feel and includes designs ranging from a chunky jacket
and a fair isle inspired dress to cosy cabled socks. Magically
photographed and styled at the beautiful Cawdor Estate in the
Scottish Highlands by Kristin Perers.

Story
3 - Reflection is inspired by the sleek, sharp, modern
lines of contemporary architecture. The reflections of shapes
and movement in modern glass help to create a story which is glamorous,
dark and mysterious. Colour direction comes from the sober steel
greys found in modern buildings, which in turn are brought to
life with highlights of Iavender, off white and bronze. The Reflection
collection reflects the glamour of the story with designs ranging
from beautifully shaped cardigans and sweaters to sexy tunics
and dresses.

How
to Wear Colour:
This feature shows how colour affects us all and which
colours best suit us. A colour analyst assessed each member
of the design team resulting in their own personal set of
colours. Each team member then chose a design from within
the magazine which has then been re-coloured into their own
colour spectrum. This fun feature is photographed by Chris
Bracewell at the Rowan mill in Holmfirth and is a great chance
to not only to meet the team behind the beautiful Rowan publications
but also to gain an insight into how colour can alter our
perceptions of people.
